Choosing your size, stock and page configuration

The choices that shape your calendar, explained the way we'd advise you.

Size. A3 gives your images real presence on the wall and the most room to write; A4 is neat and economical; A5 and the 210 × 210mm square suit smaller spaces and photo-led designs; ⅓ A3 is a tall, slim format that stands out. Choose larger if the images are the focus, smaller if it's mainly a compact planner.

Stock. Silk stocks (150gsm or the heavier 250gsm) reproduce photographs with more depth and richer colour, so they're our usual recommendation for image-led calendars. Uncoated stocks (170gsm or 250gsm) give a natural, matt surface that's easier to write on — better if people will actually plan on the calendar. The 250gsm options in either finish feel more premium and substantial.

Page configuration. This determines how your calendar is built, and how many pages of artwork to supply:

• 13-page single sided — 13 sheets printed one side. Supply 13 pages of artwork.
• 13-page single sided with double-sided back page — 13 sheets printed one side, except the last page which is double sided. Supply 14 pages of artwork.
• 7-page double sided — 7 sheets printed both sides. Supply 14 pages of artwork.

Binding edge. Choose portrait or landscape, both top-edge bound and wiro bound with a hanger, so the calendar hangs flat and flips cleanly.

Designing a wall calendar people actually keep

The difference between a calendar that stays up all year and one replaced by February is usually the design, not the print. After producing these for years, here's what we'd advise before you send artwork.

• Keep the calendar grid uncluttered. A clean, legible month-to-view is what makes a calendar useful — white space around the dates reads better than a busy grid.
• Use high-resolution photography. Wall calendars are viewed up close and printed large; low-res images that pass on screen look soft on the wall.
• Leave writing space. If people will plan on the calendar, keep the date boxes clear enough to write in.
• Don't let logos overpower the image. On branded calendars, a discreet, well-placed logo keeps the calendar something people want on the wall.
• Maintain consistent margins. Keep key content 3mm inside the trim on every page, so nothing important sits too close to the edge or the wiro binding.
• Use seasonal imagery. Matching images to the month keeps each page turn feeling deliberate and the calendar engaging all year.

Calendars are unforgiving — one wrong date or a soft photo repeats across the whole run. So before anything goes to press, every wall calendar is checked by our production team for image quality, page order, correct dates, bleed, safe margins and CMYK colour.

One mistake we often see is designing a calendar using screenshots instead of the original photographs. Screenshots contain far less image data, which becomes obvious once printed at A3 — soft edges and visible pixelation. We flag these before printing so you can supply the original file, rather than discovering it across a finished run.
