The backboard is the panel your neon is mounted on, and the style you choose changes how the finished sign looks against your wall:

• Cut to Letter, the backboard is trimmed close around each individual letter or element, so only the outline of your wording is visible, with no surrounding panel.
• Cut to Shape, the backboard follows the overall outline of your design as one connected piece, giving a cleaner single silhouette than cut to letter while still avoiding a full rectangular panel.
• Whole Board, your design sits on a complete rectangular or square backboard, usually the most straightforward option to mount and the most visible against a plain wall.

There isn't a single "correct" backboard style, it comes down to how much of the wall behind the sign you want visible. A textured or busy wall often suits Whole Board, since the solid panel gives a clean, consistent background; a plain painted wall can carry Cut to Letter or Cut to Shape well, since the wall already provides a clean backdrop.
