Choosing the right stock and lamination
This is the decision that most affects how your calendar looks and lasts, so here's how we'd advise you.
We normally recommend 150gsm silk when the calendar is photograph-led, because colours reproduce with greater depth and images look richer. 120gsm uncoated suits calendars people write on every day — it's a natural, matt surface that takes a pen without smudging, which matters if the planner will actually be used rather than just admired.
Lamination is worth thinking about based on where the calendar will hang. A calendar displayed in a kitchen is often exposed to steam and sunlight over twelve months, so a laminated cover helps it keep its appearance through the year. Gloss lamination makes photographic colours pop and adds the most protection; matt gives a premium, non-reflective finish that suits elegant branding; leaving it unlaminated keeps a natural, writeable surface. If the calendar is a photo gift for a wall, laminate it. If it's a working planner people scribble on, uncoated and unlaminated is often the better choice.
How to choose your calendar format
Not sure a drilled hole calendar is the right format? Here's how it compares to the alternatives we print, so you can choose with confidence.
| Format | How it works | Best for |
| Drilled hole | Two pages on show, hangs from a pre-drilled hole | Photo-led wall calendars, gifts, simple hanging |
| Wire / spiral bound | Bound at the top with a wire coil, flips over the coil | A very flat display and a premium bound feel |
| Desk calendar | Small standing calendar with a strut card | A desk or counter, close-up daily reference |
A drilled hole calendar is the classic wall calendar: a picture worth looking at, a month to plan on, and a hole ready to hang. Wire-bound gives a slightly more premium bound edge; a desk calendar suits a workspace rather than a wall. For most photo gifts and branded wall calendars, drilled hole is the practical, cost-effective choice — and it's the format most people picture when they think "wall calendar".
Calendar buying questions, answered
The things customers ask us most before ordering:
- Which paper is best for photos? Silk — its coated surface holds colour depth and detail. Uncoated is better only if the calendar will be written on.
- Portrait or landscape? Landscape suits wide, scenic and group photos; portrait suits tall images and single subjects. Design your artwork to match the orientation you choose.
- Should I laminate? Laminate photo calendars and anything hanging in a kitchen or sunny room; skip it for writeable planners.
- What image resolution works best? 300 dpi at final print size. A photo that looks fine on a phone can appear soft once printed at A5 — always use the original file, not a version shared through a messaging app.
- Can I start the calendar from any month? Yes — a January start is standard, but we can begin your calendar in any month for academic or financial years, or a mid-year gift.
- Can I customise the dates and add holidays? Yes — bank holidays, key dates, birthdays and company events can all be built into your design.
Who orders drilled hole calendars
The two-pages-on-show format suits anyone who wants their images or brand seen all year. In practice we print these for a wide range of customers:
- Estate agents — branded calendars featuring local landmarks that stay on clients' walls.
- Charities and schools — fundraising and community calendars featuring supporters, pupils or members.
- Sports clubs — team and season calendars for members and sponsors.
- Tradespeople — a practical branded calendar that keeps your number to hand all year.
- Restaurants and tourist attractions — showcasing dishes, venues or local scenes.
- Veterinary practices — pet-themed calendars that clients genuinely enjoy.
- Photographers and artists — twelve images sold or gifted as a portfolio on the wall.
Each of these gets the same thing from the format: a genuinely useful object that keeps a brand, cause or collection of images in view every day for a year.
Perfect for personalised Christmas gifts
Beyond business use, drilled hole calendars are one of the most popular personalised Christmas presents we print. Twelve favourite photographs become a gift that's opened in December and enjoyed every month that follows, with a new image revealed each time the page turns. It's a present that keeps giving long after the wrapping is gone — which is why families order them year after year.
Before we print: every calendar is checked
Calendars are unforgiving — one wrong date or a soft photo repeats across the whole run. So before anything goes to press, every drilled hole calendar is checked by our production team for image quality, page order, correct dates, bleed, safe margins and CMYK colour.
One of the most common issues we see is low-resolution images pulled from messaging apps rather than the original photo — they can look fine on a phone but appear soft once printed at A5. We always flag these before printing so you can send the original file, rather than discovering the problem across 50 finished calendars.

Frequently asked questions
How much does drilled hole calendar printing cost?
Our A5 drilled hole calendars start from £112.64 plus VAT for a run of 25, printed full colour and double sided on your choice of uncoated or silk stock. Because they're custom printed to order, the per-calendar cost improves as quantity increases — ideal for branded runs and gift batches.
What is a drilled hole calendar?
A drilled hole calendar is a wall calendar with a pre-drilled hanging hole that shows two pages at a time — your printed artwork on the upper page and the month's calendar grid below. It's ready to hang straight away, giving you a picture to enjoy plus space to plan, in one piece.
Which stock is best — uncoated or silk?
Choose 150gsm silk for photograph-led calendars, as its coated surface reproduces colour with more depth. Choose 120gsm uncoated if the calendar will be written on, since its natural matt surface takes a pen cleanly. It comes down to whether the calendar is mainly for display or for planning.
Should I laminate my calendar?
Laminate photo-led calendars and any that will hang in a kitchen or sunny room, where steam and sunlight can affect appearance over twelve months. Gloss lamination makes colours pop and adds protection; matt gives a premium non-reflective finish. Leave it unlaminated if you want a writeable surface.
Why are drilled hole calendars good for Christmas gifts?
Because they show two pages at a time, each month reveals a new image, so a personalised photo calendar keeps giving long after Christmas Day. Twelve favourite photographs — family, pets or travel — become a gift opened in December and enjoyed every month of the following year.
Can I start the calendar from any month and add my own dates?
Yes. A January start is standard, but we can begin your calendar in any month for academic or financial years, or a mid-year gift. You can also build in bank holidays, birthdays, company events and other key dates as part of your design.
How quickly can you print drilled hole calendars?
Our standard turnaround is 3–4 working days. Supplying correct, print-ready PDF artwork keeps things moving, and we check every file before printing — so if there's an issue with resolution, bleed or dates, we contact you before production rather than causing a delay.
What image resolution do I need for a good calendar print?
Use images at 300 dpi at final print size. The most common problem we see is photos saved from messaging apps, which are compressed and can look soft at A5. Always send the original, full-quality file for the sharpest result — we'll check every image before printing.
